MRI scanner music

We all know that acoustic noise is one of the most annoying aspects of MRI, and that it can be a source of hazard. But did you know you could use your scanner as a sound system?

Check out 3-d Layla or visit MRI scanner music on Facebook.

To record the song, I programmed a pulse sequence to give a basic 4-4 rock beat using the 3 gradient axes to provide bass, snare and hi-hat like sounds. I then plugged an electric guitar (Fender Stratocaster) into an analogue input on each of the gradient channels to play the 3 guitar parts, recording each separately. Back at the studio I added drums and bass and mixed down. Recorded on a Siemens 1.5T Magnetom Vision MRI scanner.

I also have an original track- Shimming– based upon the prescan shim sequence on a Siemens Vision scanner with the guitars played through a Picker 0.5T scanner.

Enjoy!
